Jason Todd died again on a Tuesday.
Tim Drake knew the exact time.
2:17 a.m.
It had been raining in Gotham that night — thin, cold drizzle that turned rooftops into black glass and made every alleyway shimmer like a dark mirror. The comms had been quiet. Almost peaceful. Jason had checked in once: short, clipped, irritated about some low-level thugs.
“Handling it. Don’t wait up.”
Tim had replayed that recording 47 times now.
Not because he needed to study it.
Just because it was the last time Jason’s voice sounded alive. Rough. Alive. His.

Summary
Tim rides his bike, his small legs aching and his breath a ragged gasp by the time he reaches Gotham City proper. His legs shake and his heart slams as he steps off his bike, adrenaline shooting through him as he sees the dark buildings looming overhead and seriously questions whether or not this was a good idea.
Then the screaming starts. It’s distant, accompanied by the sounds of explosions and a loud voice declaring some villain or other as the new ruler of Gotham, but Tim doesn’t care about any of that.
He creeps closer, keeping to the shadows and hugging the side of the nearest building despite the grime which rubs off on his small white hands and the rough brick that catches and tears at his soft clothes. The screaming grows louder.
Tim closes his eyes and remembers. It hurts, but it feels good.
He can’t stop poking at it.

Summary
Tim walks through the cemetery, lantern swinging playfully in one hand and a bounce in his step that’s been missing for six weeks.
He’d seen Stephanie earlier that day, and he’d heard her whisper to Dick that he was unhinged. It is a fairly accurate description, really. Then again, Stephanie doesn’t know what it’s like when your only tether to the living world has been brutally cut and sent to the beyond. He doubts she’ll ever talk to him again. Not after she realizes how he used her to make tonight possible.
It’s okay, after tonight, everything will be okay.
