Summary
Last year, Shikamaru had known exactly what would happen. He would be on a team with Ino and Chōji, he would get Asuma as a sensei, they’d be given a “genin test” to make sure they were a “real team,” and the Ino-Shika-Cho would pass down another generation. Getting assigned Kakashi shouldn’t have been too much of a change—sure, he was probably ANBU, but it was a politics thing. A high-ranking jonin for the clan heirs; it didn’t make any difference whether it was the current Hokage’s son or the former Hokage’s student who got them.
This year…
Chōji did get assigned to Asuma, but not with, you know, their team. Ino had gotten some new jonin called Kurenai, and the list had kept going without assigning Shikamaru.
“Team Seven! Ruri, Haruno Sakura, Nara Shikamaru, assigned to Hatake Kakashi!”
Troublesome. Shikamaru settles in to nap, because he'll probably have… an hour or two, at least.
Two civilian girls. Ugh. They’d better not make him fail this time, or else Mum will yell at him for all of next year too.

Summary
Civilians and orphans are always used as cannon fodder. Sakura’s not sure where she first came by this phrase. Whether she heard it or read it, she can’t quite remember, but it stuck in her head and it stays in the back of her mind whenever Team 7 takes a mission.
When Sakura and Tenten get placed on a temporary team looking into a series of kidnappings of local village girls, Sakura is naturally worried. She doesn't want to be cannon fodder. When the mission goes to pot, Sakura and Tenten find themselves far away from home and with only each other to rely on. As it turns out being cannon fodder is the least of their worries.
