Summary
The arrival at Erid is a momentous occasion. Rocky is excited and thrilled. Ryland is overwhelmed. But the reunion is happy, beautiful, amazing.
Or that's what it should have been. Except Rocky gets hurt, Ryland is left to try and communicate with an alien planet, and everyone is scrambling to figure out how to do this. To Grace, this is incredible but also bittersweet - he got Rocky home safely with the taumoeba, now he just gets... to starve. To Erid, this is insane - how did Rocky show up in an alien spaceship with a child???

Ryland Grace is stuck trying to speak Eridian, immediately makes himself sound like a child, and Rocky's world and family scramble to help this strange pebble. Misunderstandings galore, alongside hurt/comfort and angst and fluff.

Creepy. Ominous, even. There’s a little code attached to the file that hides it from a system search. The only way I could have found it was an accident.
I open the file and a video log pops up. The play button blinks mockingly. The date at the corner of the log is two years before I first woke up on the Hail Mary. It would have been recorded when I was deep in coma-sleep. When everyone on board should have been deep in coma-sleep.
Ilyukhina’s slightly pixelated visage is sprawled across a pilot chair and she’s mid-chew on a twizzler.

In order to reduce his sentence, Simon makes a deal to go onto the SM-13 and collect data from the blood ocean. He doesn’t know the extent of what that means until it’s too late.
Grace, formerly a scientist but now a criminal, was shunned from society for being a survivor of one of the greatest catastrophes since the Quiet Rapture. He decides to volunteer for a research mission to put good to his name.
They end up stuck together, untied only by a shared goal and a desire to survive. Things do not go smoothly aboard the Iron Lung.

Ch. 3: Grace and Simon are sent back down to depth in the blood ocean and encounter the “skeleton” again, at which point Grace realizes that the creature only appeared to be a skeleton because they were looking at it with an x-ray camera. Panicked, he manages to convince Simon that they need to leave. Simon quickly agrees. As they start to make their way out of danger, Grace and Simon talk, and Simon learns that Grace used to live and work on Filament Station. Simon is immediately overwhelmed with guilt but can’t find it in himself to tell Grace the truth of what happened. They find rations and eat them, and also drink some of the (medical) alcohol that they find on the submarine.

Colt falls, and the cables whir.
They’re ten, and a group of boys corner Ryland during recess. He takes every insult they throw at him, shoulders hunched and head bowed, until Colt elbows his way between them. Colt, who shouts back with spitting insults and swinging fists. Colt, who ends up in the principal’s office much more after that.

They’re fifteen, and Colt is reminding Ryland that yes, he does need sleep to function, and no, an energy drink does not count as a meal and oh my god what do you mean that’s the only thing you’ve eaten for the past three days?
