Loss isn’t a skill-building game where you can rack up points and get good at it. It just piles up, heavier and heavier, until you collapse under the weight of it.

They’d know what he meant. He hoped they’d know. Someone was kneeling on his shell. He threw an elbow to get them off, but they grabbed his wrists and forced them together, putting something around them that cut into his skin. He kicked out, satisfied for a moment as his foot connected with something soft, and someone grunted. Then they bound his ankles, too, pulling tight – cord or plastic ties or whatever digging into his tendons. He vaguely felt several pairs of hands lifting him before slipping into unconsciousness.
