Comment on Where You Can Find Us in 2024

  1. I see. So I was right on TikTok itself being banned. I’m glad AO3 is fine! It’s definitely good the nonprofit is protecting AO3, that’s a relief to hear. That’s true, one can never let their guard down tooooo much.

Thank you for explaining it to me!

Yeah; keep in mind that things could change - the TikTok ban is set to take effect in late 2025, I think? And the Supreme Court still hasn't made a decision on an appeal that was made, etc., so really, who knows what will ultimately happen, since politics these days is like an extremely fast roller coaster. But according to the last news I heard, TikTok is currently on track to getting banned.

And yeah, I'm really glad that AO3's sticking with the non-profit route, that alone is reason enough for me to donate during their fundraising drives. But politicians can be pretty evil and/or stupid; if, for example, they were to categorize AO3 as a site that would require ID submissions as proof of user eligibility, that would be catastrophic. I'm really glad that AO3 is staying on top of these developments and keeping us informed.

      1. Oh I’m keeping that in mind no worries! Oh, that’s far later than TikTok itself is making it out to be. Oh, well, yeah I suppose nothing really is set in stone if the Supreme Court hasn’t made a decision yet. Ah, so it’s on track, I gotcha.

Me too. Same for me, if I had enough to donate. They can be so stupid! That’s a scary concept.. A majority of the members on AO3 would have to stop posting and writing on here, because they just wouldn’t have an id. It also ruins the point of anonymity on the internet. Me too, it makes me feel better about everything.

Lol! XD I'm not on TikTok, but I can imagine that people over there are exaggerating the timeline. In real life, things like this are slooooow, so what sometimes happens is that a threat is made, people get up in arms about it, it's in the news a lot for a while...but then if the threat is successful, it'll take a long time to actually implement, so the protesters think they've won and forget about it and don't realize what's happening until the implementation finally happens and it's too late.
(I'm not actually a fan of TikTok, but I've seen this same strategy being used against institutions that I do care about.)

Two things really concern me about the ID idea; one is the loss of anonymity that you mentioned, and the other is that it would be a serious security problem. There are already so many data breaches and identity thefts happening due to things we actually need (healthcare institutions, credit bureaus, etc.) or have control over (online shopping, etc.), the LAST thing we need is our sensitive information getting stolen due to data breaches on sites that shouldn't have our information to begin with. -.-

The world has gone so crazy, it's so stressful to live in. DX And what's maddening is that many of the people who think they're trying to make it better are actually making it worse. *sigh*

          1. Oh they totally are. They said it was going to be gone in January of 2025, and everybody was making montages of their best videos and how much they’ll miss the platform. I’m not gonna miss it, if it does get banned. Place is so toxic it beats Britney’s song by a landslide.

Hm, it’s kind of sneaky. Going so slow people don’t realize it’s moving, until it springs up and snags them up in their jaws. It reminds me of those ocean floor dweller fish that camouflage and sneak around until they catch unsuspecting prey. Nobody realizes it was there, until it took action.
(Me either. Aw, I feel bad, I’m sorry that happened to things you care about. I’m not too in to politics to know what might’ve happened, but I do feel bad.)

Exactly, I forgot about the security breaches, but it would totally be a call for concern on that front. I feel like giving our ids away to social media sites is how we’re going to ruin our anonymity on the internet, but basically give out our personal information to strangers is what’s going to make social media fall.

It really has, I hate it so much. Exactly! The best way to make things better is to listen to what people actually want. But they want to follow where the money goes, not where the people goes.

Yeah.... Welp, all we can do is our best, and be nice to the people around us. And vote. X'D
