So it’s really not any of Dean’s business when some weirdo antisocial ornithologist sets up a tent a few miles away, a dark-haired blue-eyed guy who’s doing a “very long-term" study on birds or wings or something, and who never, ever takes off his big lumpy backpack. But then the new guy starts dropping by camp for coffee and... well, he’s not officially part of camp; he's not Dean’s responsibility; he’s really not Dean’s problem at all, but when a strange blizzard comes sweeping in, Dean gets worried and goes to check. Thing is, Dean's spent years in the sweeping vistas of the Arctic. He knows all about the midnight sun and the northern lights, the ice caves and avalanches, the rough-and-ready Haul Road truckers and the even rougher-and-readier wild animals. In that metal sarcophagus, Steve was injected with the Super Soldier Serum and bombarded with Vita Rays. The second it began, Steve could feel his insides falling apart. Dissolving into a pinkish slurry. It started with his muscles, his limbs, his bones. He screamed. But he did not let it stop. The forging of a weapon is painful.
Sixty-odd years later, a new weapon was built much the same. This time with bones of steel and iron, blood of hydraulics, and a mind of wires. Steve wondered if it screamed too. If copper blazed with synthetic pain as wars were fought across motherboards. If it too saw that Nothingness. And if that scared it.

an Ultron rewrite, taking place just after the events of The Avengers, and featuring a whole lot of angst.

Summary
Cybertron has been under the rule of the Primes since time-immemorial. The position has always been passed from creator to creation, ensuring a continuous semi-divine lineage. Until the day that Orion Pax is chosen by the Matrix of Leadership to be its next bearer. From one cycle to the next, a new dynasty is declared to be ruling Cybertron, and Optimus Prime is hailed as their new supreme ruler.
Orion has never been blind to how their society's caste system can often cause more harm than good. He'd hoped to be able to change things with his newfound power, but quickly realizes that the Senate and the priests hold much more sway over his life than he'd expected. There's also whatever is happening with his consorts, who act like their new life is anything but wanted.

Primes traditionally have harems composed of bots from the high-castes of various city states, called their consorts. Allegedly, this is a very desirable position - a cushy life with no worries, their only duty continuing the Prime's lineage. What the people of Cybertron don't know is that the position of consort is more akin to that of a hostage than a real partner. Optimus Prime is also unaware. His consorts are not.

Jim shook his head, sighing. “The wedding was canceled.”
“Right. About that. Vulcans are insanely secretive about their culture, but the Bolian Institute of Linguistics experts are all convinced that since Spock didn’t marry T’Pring but did complete the ritual…” she shrugged, then gave him a saucy wink. “Listen. Just roll with it.”
“That’s what he did on the sands of Vulcan.” Beside Jim, McCoy took another sip of his bourbon laced coffee. “Which is why we’re in this situation now.”
Kithari shot Bones a knowing smile. He raised his mug to her, mostly to hide his return smirk.
“It’s only ten days, Jim,” Kithari grinned at him. “You can handle a special ambassadorial guest for ten days.”
