In his hypnopompic state he imagined he heard claws clicking on steel, and smiled at a memory of a little brown-and-white dog sitting patiently, holding out a paw, while he waited for Jet to dig out the smallest of his bonsai sheers to trim his claws.
“Ein,” he chuckled fondly, and opened his eyes.

It was unnerving to lose time like this, falling asleep and waking up and seeing its bride get locked in a dark room, never to see the light of day, hear the sound of a human's voice, and then before it could even comprehend what that meant, it was out, in the Pit, beating men twice its size to kneeling, covered in blood and tissue, but even that was only a passing moment. Suddenly, it was no longer growing, bigger than ever before, its partner for a mission, with an order to "polish up" its training.
The Asset does not have many things of its own. Its clothes, its gear, the air in its lungs, the thoughts in its head, none of it belongs to it.
When they say, "This is yours," it's scared to ask what that means.
