Sundrop Phoenix used to love swimming when he was a kid, but he ended up developing a fear of it after he was attacked by an aggressive young mer at the beach when he was ten years old.
Now, 16 years after the incident and after going through CBT and extensive exposure therapy, Sun's physicist signed him up for a temporary job as an assistant in marine biology to help him overcome his thalassophobia and it's there that he encounters the same mer that attacked him and caused him to develop thalassophobia to begin with!
And, if that wasn't bizarre enough, Sun is somehow able to communicate with the aggressive mer while everyone else can only hear hisses, trills, whistles, and clicks.
Furthermore, Sun cannot help but notice that his mother seems to be keeping a secret from him; a secret linked to his late father.

For a moment, Astarion only saw red.
For a moment, Astarion heard nothing but the roaring, rushing sounds in his adept ears - that of the rolling sea, and Tav's blood catapulting through her arteries with her own anger.
Astarion's eyes focused and traced her form and up her extended arm, his lip twitching with the beginning of a snarl at the action that had been denied him, but the scent of Gale's blood hit his nose then. The odor was strong despite the pervading smell of salt in the surf that lapped along the shore at their feet.
